Unit 11 1.2

Unit 11 1.2 - Strengths & Ambitions

My next task was to take the information I evaluated about my future ambitions and research what jobs are currently available within the media and progression routes such as university, apprenticeships and job training. Then researching and explaining the steps you will need to go through to work towards these routes.

Producer

The first job role I researched was the role of a producer. The role of a producer interested me as I personally enjoy creating content and editing it into a final piece. I have a creative mind and I like how producer take a strong role within a production team.

I researched a number of progression routes, the qualification requirements, the skills needed, what the role of a producer entails, common employers and types of work experience that will help me gain the correct skills to progress as a producer.

The link above benefited my research as it gave me all the information about the role of a producer in a clear and easy to read format. As I mentioned before about common employers, it gives you direct links to these companies so you are able to communicate with this companies if you are looking for employment. Within the section about famous media companies, this link gives you a list of websites where they show current job vacancies such as:
They all allow me to search for job vacancies within the media which will benefit me currently and in the future. It will benefit me currently as I am able to see what employers and clients are looking for in terms of experience, qualifications, media related skills and personal skills.

Social Media Producer

For my next job role I researched a social media producer in which I found the BBC was advertising. Though now the application has been closed and filled, I can now see what the BBC is looking for in a candidate (http://careerssearch.bbc.co.uk/jobs/job/Social-Media-Producer/18460).

A social media producer is a recent job role within the media industry and found a website where it explains the difference between being a regular producer and a social media producer.

This link was beneficial as it broke down the elements of what a social media producer entails, the history behind it, what you need to know and learn to be a social media producer, and how it benefits so many companies to have this job role within the team.

Gov.uk also have training and apprenticeship courses surrounding 'Digital marketing and social media'. This is essential for a social media producer as they need to know the ins and outs of social media and all the facts and figures (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/social-media-and-digital-marketing-apprenticeships). This website and link in specific can help me progress in to the social media producer sector as it allows me to learn in depth about social media, therefore heightening my chances of employment.

Film/Video Editor

The final job role I researched into was the role of a film/video editor. I found an interest in editing during my first year of media at college, especially when creating my documentary. Though I have only acquired a certain amount of skills in editing I am more than willing to develop of my skills to the best of my ability and create high quality projects.

I used the Prospects website once again for this job role as this specific website gives me a good understanding of what is needed and ways to gain employment and clients (https://www.prospects.ac.uk/job-profiles/film-video-editor). When researching into progression routes in particular, I find the 'job vacancies', 'qualifications', 'employers', 'work experience', 'professional development' and 'career prospects' sections most useful as they help me create a personal plan for myself, so I am able to progress in to the field I want to.

There is a link on the 'work experience' section where the website allows you to search for specific internships, work placements and work shadowing etc.(https://www.prospects.ac.uk/jobs-and-work-experience/work-experience-and-internships). This is highly beneficial to me as I am able to contact people who work within this field, ask them questions and possibly ask if I am able to shadow whilst they are working on a project. When applying for an interview or when in an interview, though I am still an aspiring editor, I am able to say that I have worked along side a professional editor, saw what they do on a day to day basis and possibly say that I have worked briefly with some of their equipment. This along could give me a  better chance of impressing employers and clients as they can see I have taken the time to practically learn about the job role rather than just researching it.

When researching about film/video editors, I found that they are most likely to work freelance. From this information I researched the advantages and disadvantages of working freelance (https://www.monster.com/career-advice/article/surprising-pros-and-cons-working-freelance-or-full-time-0626). This link was helpful as it broke down the pros and cons, gave the facts and figures behind working freelance and takes into account that people have different situations.

I found an interest in work shadowing, so I selected the link to work shadowing and a person who is an editorial manager broke down into sections 'what is work shadowing?', 'who can I shadow?', 'how do I apply for work shadowing?', and finally 'how will it help my career?'.

The link above shows me different places, including well known companies, that are currently allowing people to come and work shadow. This link benefits me as it gives me experience within the media field and possibly allows me to work with well known brands and companies.Work shadowing can also allow me to gain a small amount of contacts and opportunities to work with new people.

In my written document I stated what I needed to do in order to become an editor. I first needed to have enough interest in the field to pursue it professionally, earn a bachelor's degree in editing, work with multiple companies to put together a portfolio of high quality work so I will then be able to give my portfolio out to higher companies and work my way up. This link (http://creativeskillset.org/creative_courses/courses/3491_ba_hons_television_studio_production) is a course over view for a BA Hons Television Studio Production and I believe this will help me if I ever decide to go to university.
